Upstate South Carolina is so fortunate to have so many beautiful areas to make our home. One of the lesser-known areas is Lake Cherokee. Lake Cherokee is a 220-acre private lake, the largest private lake in Oconee County. It is stunningly beautiful as it is bordered by Sumter National Forest and is fed by five mountain streams and springs. Whether you are looking for a place to call home or vacation home to enjoy during your time off, Lake Cherokee is a great choice.

Here are five reasons you will love Lake Cherokee:

1. It’s Still Under The Radar

Other lakes in the area, like Lake Keowee and Lake Hartwell, have become very popular. Each year they get more and more crowded and built up. Lake Cherokee is still small and not as well known. This is great for those who like your space and privacy and don’t want to battle any crowds.

2. There’s So Much To Do!

If you love to fish, you cannot miss Lake Cherokee. It is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, shellcracker, and catfish. If fishing isn’t for you, you could spend the day waterskiing or tubing on the lake. Jet skis are not allowed on the lake, but boats are. You’re also able to camp and hike around the lake to take in the gorgeous mountain views.

3. There’s A Home For Almost Any Budget

Lake Cherokee does have restrictions on the type of home that is built. Mobile homes are not allowed, and all homes must be larger than 900 square feet. Even with these restrictions, you can still find homes or lots for sale for a reasonable price, and many are on the water. Plus, many of the waterfront lots have a nice slope toward the lake to optimize the views of the lake and the mountains surrounding it.

4. You Can Build Your Dream Home Here!

At the moment, there are more lots for sale here than there are homes, but that means you can build a home that perfectly suits you. There are only a few building restrictions within the Lake Cherokee HOA, so you will have a lot of freedom with your design.

5. Not Too Far From Major Cities

Lake Cherokee is only an hour’s drive from Greenville and about a 2 ½ hour drive from both Atlanta and Charlotte. This is great for those of you looking to purchase a home to use as an escape from the big city life. Your calm, quiet retreat is only a short drive away!
